I can imagine you without your home
Private View 20 February 2012, 7-9pm
The exhibition continues until 14 March 2012
I can imagine you without your home, is the debut exhibition in the UAE by Palestinian artist, Hazem Harb. This exhibition brings together a unique body of work, which explores the artist’s first hand experience of the on-going conflict in his native Gaza. Harb is interested in how the invasion of private space manifests itself in the psyche of people who experience conflict, in other words, the cognitive manifestation of conflict. He brings to the foreground, the human conditions in these situations, highlighting what is left behind through photography, film and mixed media installation.
Through the use of photomontage, Harb creates photographs that are multi-layered surfaces, both in appearance and meaning. They demonstrate an intense level of process, which involves printing original photographs, painting the surfaces with ink, that are then reproduced on a larger scale.
While using a variety of techniques, Hazem Harb deals with a number of core themes including war, loss, trauma, human vulnerability and global instability. He continues to explore his own brand of multi-media, conceptual art using all the tools at his disposal.
Born in 1980 in Gaza City, Palestinian artist Hazem Harb currently lives and works in Rome, Italy. In 2004, Harb enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy and graduated from The European Institute of Design in the city in 2009.
Harb's work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions in the UK, USA, Italy, Palestine and Jordan. His first solo exhibition in London, Is this your first time in Gaza? had the central poignant message highlighting the checkpoint and suffering it inflicts on Palestinian travellers.
Harb is a previous recipient of The Delfina Foundation residency supported by A. M. Qattan Foundation and has won numerous awards, including being selected as of one ten artists for A. M. Qattan Foundation Young Artist of the Year 2008
